Our Team

We think our staff ROCKS!

We hire the very best – from the front desk to our instructors, to route setters and management.  All of our staff have cleared a Police Reference check. In addition, all our Instructors have Standard First Aid with CPR training, and have attained an appropriate level of certification to demonstrate their qualifications and professionalism as Climbing Instructors. (See FAQ’s for more details).  Our Route Setters have over 20 years of combined setting experience and have together set many competitions.

Who’s Who

Clint Searle

Gym Manager & Head Instructor

Clint has officially been in the climbing industry since 1997, when he became certified as an Outdoor Top-Rope Instructor and Level III High Angle Rig Rappel Rescuer.  He is also certified as a CWA Provider of the Climbing Gym Instructor Program.  Before indoor climbing, Clint had been an avid outdoor climber, climbing anything from trees, buildings and the odd lamp post, as well as the cliffs and rocks of Ontario, BC, Kentucky, West Virginia, New Hampshire and the UK.

Along with years of recreational and competitive climbing experience, Clint has also been on the administrative end working as a climbing gym manager in Toronto. He is also a licensed helicopter pilot!

Kellen Tapley

Head Routesetter

Kellen has been immersed in the climbing industry since 2009!  In 2011, he decided to upgrade his qualifications with a comp setting clinic hosted by Tonde Katiyo, as well as an NCCP coaching course.

Kellen was Head Route Setter at Coyote Rock Gym, in Ottawa.  There, Kellen co-founded and was co-Head Coach of the Competitive Youth Team, the Youth Rec Program and the Pre-Competitive Program.

Kellen has set over 30 comps, for TDB, OCF, NCBS, SSF and other unsanctioned local events, and has helped with setting at half a dozen gyms across Ontario and Quebec! Kellen has also been Head Judge at a number of events, including TDB and OCF Youth Comps.

In the summer of 2014, Kellen moved to Toronto to take on the roles of Youth Rec Program Director, Assistant Coach of the Competitive Youth Team, and Route Setter at True North Climbing.  Kellen has also served as an OCF Board Member and Technical Delegate… AND – he has a bunny named Mirabel.

John Gross

After 25 years in the computer animation software business, and 6 years of recreational indoor climbing, John took the leap into the climbing gym business. He spent months researching and networking with people in the climbing community and attended the Climbing Wall Association Summit conference in Boulder Colorado in April, 2009 before committing to the project.

John has “competed” in 6 Tour de Bloc events, consistently helping the other climbers look good. He is a former chair of the Ontario Climbing Federation. A proud dad of two amazing kids, John was raised in North York and lives near the gym with his two black cats: Dr. Jekyll and Puck.

Will Jung

Assistant Gym Manager & Director of Youth Recreational Programs

Will came to True North in 2012 mainly as a top rope climber, but soon added lead climbing and bouldering to his repertoire. He initially joined the True North team as belay staff, and a few months after that, was promoted to Instructor and Route Setter. Since becoming staff, Will used his construction background to help build new additions, such as the Moon Board and the Teknik wall, as well as performing general repairs and maintenance around the gym.

Apart from indoor climbing and competitions, Will enjoys going on climbing road trips, camping, and cheering for the Blue Jays!
