Youth Competitive Team Program

The TNC Youth Competitive Team Program is for the most dedicated kids who want to grow into strong climbers and seek to push themselves to reach their potential.

Team members train 2-3 times per week for 3 hours per practice. The members are selected through tryouts, and an invitation by the head coach. This year, we have 36 kids ranging from D category (11 and under) to Juniors (18/19) on our Youth Competitive Team.

The Competition Season

The team competes in the Ontario Climbing Federation Youth Series in both Bouldering and top-rope/lead (called Difficulty) disciplines, so parents should expect to take their children to weekend competitions during competitive season (October through May).  Competitors earn series points based on their competition results in pursuit of the Ontario Cup in each age/gender category.  There is also a National Championship held for each discipline, and Ontario’s top athletes earn the right to compete at those events.

What the Fees Include

Each member is expected to provide their own equipment: harness, shoes, chalk bag, rope and belay device (if leading).  Team members must maintain a membership throughout the season as well as pay the monthly competitive team fee.  The team fee covers training and coaching at competitions, uniforms, and yoga and sports psychology sessions once a month.

Volunteers run every competition, so each family is required to post a volunteer bond at the start of the season.  This amount is refunded once the family has volunteered at two events during the season.  Parents can help by belaying or judging, and training is provided at no cost to help everyone gain those qualifications.

Code of Ethics

Because we feel strongly about fair play and proper behavior by everyone who represents TNC, we ask all competitors, parents of youth competitors, coaches and other officials to sign our Competition Code of Ethics.
